Fueling your body properly before exercise can be the difference between feeling great and feeling awful. So, it’s important to eat the right things before working out. As a general rule of thumb, you don’t want to be too full before exercising; if you think you need a snack before you’re workout, make sure it’s light.
Whatever snack you choose should consist of carbs and protein. These are the ideal macromolecules to fuel your body. If you are doing a long workout, slow-burning carbs, such as oatmeal, are best because they will sustain you for a long time. Avoid foods that are rich in fiber, like raspberries. I like to eat some type of granola bar, as they are quick, not too filling, and burn nicely during the workout. Additionally, fruit, like bananas, can be a good pre-workout snack option. Toast with nut butter is a good source of carbohydrates and protein.
The truth about snacking pre-working out is that you will have some hits and some misses. Find what works for you and stick with it; your body will thank you.
